Conference programme

Some impressions

The Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Amsterdam is proud to announce that it will host the EALE Conference 2008 on September 18th-20, 2008. The event will bring together all those with an interest in the field of labour economics. The annual conference provides a meeting point where members and top researchers are presenting and discussing their ongoing research.

The Conference will be organized by the Amsterdam School of Economics of the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies.

About the University of Amsterdam (UvA)
The University of Amsterdam has a long history. It evolved from the Athenaeum Illustre (1632) and now, with around 25,000 students, 5,000 staff and a budget of over 487million euros, it ranks among the largest comprehensive universities of Europe. It belongs to the League of European Research Universities and maintains intensive contact with universities all over the world. The UvA aims to offer an inspiring, broadly-oriented international academic environment where both staff and students can develop their capacities to an optimal level. The UvA is characterised by a critical, creative and international atmosphere, open-minded and strongly engaged with society. Because the UvA is located in both historic and modern buildings spread throughout the city, the university forms an integral part of Amsterdam.  The University of Amsterdam (UvA) was considered the best university in the Netherlands according to the THES-QS World University Rankings 2007, a survey of the world's 200 best universities. The UvA rose to 48th place.

About the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE)

It is a school with about 110  academic staff and 2400 students.

ASE has a very strong  emphasis on research and scores well in international rankings. ASE has nine high-performing research programmes working on the following themes: Econometrics (prof.dr. J.F. Kiviet), Operations Research (prof.dr. N.M. van Dijk), Equilibrium, Expectations & Dynamics (prof.dr. C.H. Hommes), Actuarial Science  (prof.dr. R. Kaas), The Transformation of Europe (macro- and international economics) (prof.dr. R.M.W.J. Beetsma), Human Capital (Labour and Education Economics /SCHOLAR) (prof.dr. J. Hartog), History & Methodology of Economics (prof.dr. J.B. Davis), Experimental and Political Economics/CREED (prof.dr. F.A.A.M. van Winden), ENCORE/Industrial Organization (prof.dr. P. van Cayseele).

The research programmes  focus on different topics within the broad field of economics and econometrics and publish in top-level international economics journals  (such as American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Political Economy and Econometrica) and various  specialised  journals (Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Labour Economics etc. etc.).

ASE aims to  prepare students for a career in research or a leading position in the public or private sector. Its educational programme is based on  the academic ideal of intertwined research and teaching.  In addition to the regular master programmes, ASE also has a two-year research master, the Master of Philosophy in Economics (MPhil),  based in the Tinbergen Institute, which was recently (2005) highly acclaimed by an international  committee of excellent  academics, chaired by Prof. Dale W. Jorgenson (Harvard University).

About the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS)
AIAS is an interdisciplinary institute of the University of Amsterdam for research and teaching on labour issues combining economics, law, psychology, sociology and health studies. The research of the institute covers three fields: institutions, inequalities and internationalisation, with a focus on industrial relations and organisation, the workings of the labour market, social and employment policy, and wage formation. On the teaching side there is a joint PHD programme with other leading institutes in Europe, a Master programme "HRM - Labour, Organisation and Policy" (in Dutch), a Minor, and specialised ad-hoc courses organised for or together with third parties. Though it will be only 10 years old in 2008, it has successfully built an extensive portfolio of projects funded by the European Commission, the Dutch Science Foundation and various private foundations. AIAS hosts the coordination of the European Low-wage Employment Research network LoWER and the international Wage Indicator web survey that runs in many countries.
